Dano, Your understanding is correct. The problem with trying to get a realistic chrome look is that you must use metals. The ability chrome has to reflect and have a mirror type finish is simply impossible with standard powder technology. Sure, every month different companies come out with there "super-duper xtreme-to-the-max chrome" or "super-de-duper xtreme-to-the-MORE-max chrome", but they simply aren't chrome. I refer to them as 5 foot chromes: from 5 feet away, they look like chrome. Unfortunately, the closer you get the more you can tell the difference. Another issue is that most of the powdered chromes require a clear-coat which always seems to dull the shine. Now, before anyone jumps up and down, I do realize that there are a few that DO NOT require the clear. I also am aware that there are new chromes coming out all the time. I'm not slamming any powder companies: it simply is what it is. Vacuum metalization is a very cool process with awesome results. It does use a vacuum chamber to draw a metalized powder onto the part. There are specific clears or candy colors that are then used to top coat the part for protection from UV and chemicals. The parts look amazing, but the process is a little more pricey than many shops care to invest. I don't know the price of the cabinets off the top of my head, but I'm willing to bet you there's a zero or two at the end of it. Thanks for the question. Hope that helps! |
